Week 8 (May 27-30)
Week 8 - Day 4
As of 6:30-6:45 PM, recyclables were still being picked up in the area shown below ... "X" marks the spot where the first truck picture was taken.
And here are the trucks ...
and ....
Hmmm ... two months and we're still approaching 7 PM each night.
After April 7, five (5) of the Solid Waste employees were kept on due to the severance agreement terms. Needless to say, they've been helping out the contractor (you've probably seen them around town ... I know I have).
Two of them retire today (congratulations!). Another two retire at the end of June. That means that only one, plus a Solid Waste Coordinator remain. We've been supplementing the contractor's payroll free of charge (but not to us!) with these folks.
Wonder what will happen when they're all gone?
Week 8 - Day 3
Sorry, guys ... no list, no pictures tonight ... had an evening meeting.
Did get a couple of reports from Roving Reporters, though.
At 6:15, the trucks were still working in the Kenny/Reed/Henderson/McCoy quadrant.
Don't know what time they finished.
Week 9 - Day 2
A lot going on that will be reported in later issues, but here's something for today from a Roving Reporter.
"I had just gotten out from visiting my daughter's class at 11:05 at Barrington, and I, as well as a lot of other fathers and mothers, saw this trash truck barreling down Andover ... going the WRONG WAY down a one way street ... right next to the elementary school. I've had it. I thought you guys were a little extreme on this stuff, but now I'm convinced. What if my child had been crossing the street? Kindergarten was just letting out."
Yup ... just a couple of questions.
1. What is a garbage truck doing in Day 1 territory
when it's Day 2?
2. What do these signs say?
3. Don't the contractor's personnel know the routes by NOW?
4. Does something really serious need to happen before action is taken?
What is going on here in Upper Arlington?
Week 8 - Day 1
A Ho-Hum Day ... BUT What else aren't we being told?
At 5:15, the following streets hadn't had their trash collected ...
Beverly
Andover
Suffolk (trash and bottles/cans)
Baldridge
And at 6:00, the trash truck was picking up the last load on Suffolk.
When I was taking my daughter to school this morning, I noticed a man in a buggy coming down Tremont. I recognized him from when the city employees used to pick up our trash. From what I understand, city employees are still being used to pick up medical exemption (292 homes) recyclables. Indeed, the contract did not specify that medical exemption recyclables were to be picked up garage-side, so the city has been doing this for the last two months. If this is permanent, we can add another $40,000 per year (plus or minus) to the cost of the new service, as this was not included in the calculations when city staff presented its numbers to Council.
I'd still like to know who's paying for the medical exemptions' garage-side service. If it's the city, then it's roughly $45,000 per year. Add these two together, and you get yet another half million bucks (actually $425,000 ... YOUR tax dollars) over the 5-year period that are unrealized savings.
Like I said, a "Ho-Hum" day ... but it appears that we're not being told quite everything about the ins-and-outs of this new service, nor about how much we're actually paying for it.
Shhhhh .....
