Week 3 - Thursday/Friday

Late again ... 5:48, the trucks were still picking up recyclables.  Another $.01 ... now we're up to $.11.

On Friday, the trucks were picking up the recyclables in the Winfield area that they had missed the day before.

Week 3  ... Wednesday

The following is courtesy of a Roving Reporter ...

Reed Road, 5:38 PM ... stuff STILL had not been picked up ... another $.01 ... we can all send the City a bill for $.10!

And now for some rather uncomfortable news.  This website has been identified by the contractor as being "deranged" and "racist" in a letter sent to WOSU.  A gentleman from WOSU interviewed me today to follow up on the claims.

Here's the hard copy of the report.
Click on it to read it.

Here's the WOSU report that aired April 23, 2008.

You will notice that the Assistant City Manager now claims that the city will save $200,000 per year by switching to this new service.  That' a far cry from the "$5 million over 5 years" that we, as residents, were told just two months ago.

from the contractor's Project Manager.
(Note:  We have since learned that this letter
was also sent to the City "Contact Web Editor"
via email on the night of April 13, 2008.

And listen Up ... This is NOT GOOD.

According to a police report filed on Tuesday, "three younger males in a gold Camry" were observed throwing papers with racially-denigrating phrases into one of our residents' recycle bins.  The owner observed this happen, and the contractor reported it to the police.

The petition effort and UATRASH.org has nothing to do with the contractor ... our position has always been that it has everything to do with our city government, which denied us the right to vote.

If you have any information that could lead to the identification of these persons, PLEASE contact the UA police department.

Week 3 ... Tuesday

Be really nice to the folks who live on Woodstock ... as of 5:50, their recyclables still hadn't been picked up, and they were missed last week.  Yes, the city owes us another $.01 ...
Current total?  $.09 per household.

Week 3 ... Monday

I didn't even have to leave my house to earn each of us another $.01 ... at 5:10, my recyclables were being picked up, and the worker threw my recycle bin across the street.
The city now owes each household $.08.

NEWSFLASH!

Got a report from a roving reporter.

"I just happened to be looking out our front window when the new recyclable truck stopped to pick up our items.  The employee looked at my two plastic disposable jugs with screw-on lids and labeled with a black marker "DRAIN OIL."  This was two gallons of used motor oil identified as recyclable as I have done under our old system.  The employee then untied our closed household refuse bag, inserted the two containers of oil and retied the bag.  The bag was later picked up by the refuse truck."

Have the procedures been changed?  Why is used motor oil going into the SWACO landfill?

As it turns out, motor oil was not included in the contract, so the contractor is treating this hazardous material as regular trash.  Residents are only doing what they were told to do in the recent "City iNSIGHT."

And another problem ...

The city's contract with the contractor does NOT REQUIRE criminal background checks on the workers who are picking up our trash!

We've placed a "Public Document Request" into the City Clerk's office to have the city
request from the contractor copies of the criminal background checks that they have done (the city is allowed to do this per Section VII.7.6). We need contractural assurances that background checks have and will be done.

This is a potential safety and security issue
that the city did not address in its contract.

Click here to listen to the fact that this was brought up during the pre-award Council meeting with the contractor's rep.
